Tae Kwon-do literally means 'The Art of the Foot & Hand'. It is a Korean Martial
Art which although having roots in the ancient Orient, was developed to its
present form in the middle of this century. Inaugurated in 1955 by General Choi
Hong Hi; Tae Kwon-do was introduced into this country in 1967.
Tae Kwon-do incorporates many facets, including self defence, fitness,
flexibility, discipline and the building of confidence. One of the most
attractive assets of Tae Kwon-do training is that it is available to anyone
young or old, male or female, fit or unfit, because it allows you to progress at
your own pace. Many people do Tae Kwon-do for fitness, others to lose weight or
for self-defence, many people like to enter competitions - you really can get
out of it what you want.
Tae Kwon-do is probably best known for its spectacular kicking techniques which
are featured in our demonstrations, but solid basics are taught to lay a strong
foundation to build on, these being stances, blocks and punches. The class
always begins, as with most properly run sports, with a warm up to prevent pulls
and strains.
The Tae Kwon Do Association of Great Britain (TAGB)
The Tae Kwon Do Association of Great Britain (TAGB) is a nationally recognised
Tae Kwon Do organisation in this country. It was formed in 1983 and has since
become the founding member of the British Tae Kwon Do Council (BTC) which is
recognised by the United Kingdom Sports Council.
TAGB instructors are highly qualified, accredited individuals with many years'
experience in teaching mixed classes which often include young children and
disability groups. Training in Tae Kwon Do can start at any age. TAGB members
start as young as five and recently one of our members gained his fifth dan
black belt on his 70th birthday!
Because of its high-kicking, fast-paced style Tae Kwon Do is a thoroughly modern
way of getting fit. The TAGB is a great advocate of fun and fitness at an early
age and TAGB instructors often work with local schools to teach self-defence. As
the largest martial arts organisation in the world the TAGB has over 25,000
accredited members, 600 clubs, and organises seminars with World Masters,
demonstrations, and national, regional and international championships every
month of the year.
The TAGB is not just concerned with its own development. That is why it has
played a leading role in the reunification of British Tae Kwon-Do into one body.
In 1988, the TAGB helped found the British Tae Kwon-Do Council (BTC), this being
the only governing body of Tae Kwon-Do to be recognised by the Sports Council.
The TAGB also helped found Tae Kwon-Do International, the object of which is to
bring together Tae Kwon-Do practioners throughout the World. Tae Kwon-Do
International is non-political and it doesn't ttempt to dictate to member
countries how they must run their affairs. Since its foundation in 1993, Tae
Kwon-Do International has grown to become one of the biggest World Tae Kwon-Do
bodies. Its World Championships are amongst the largest and best organised and
it draws its participation from every contingent.
Tae Kwon Do training is about learning to discipline your mind as well as your
body and TAGB instructors always include elements in their teaching which help
their students to develop mentally as well as physically.
With clubs throughout the country the TAGB is the ideal organisation for
learning a martial art that has evolved through a 3,000 year history to become
the newest Olympic sport.
You will need to be licenced by the T.A.G.B and the B.T.C (British Tae Kwon-do Council), this will also insure you in case of injury during training.. This is a once yearly payment. We are currently running a promotion which offers a free training suit when you decide to enrol and purchase your licence.
Initially you will be graded at approximately three monthly intervals. All
gradings are carried out by Mr Dave Oliver 8th Dan and Chairman of the TAGB.
Although we do insist on a courteous and respectful attitude, our classes are
varied, interesting and fun and if you decide to take up Tae Kwon-do with us,
you can be assured of 100% commitment and encouragement from us and our
Assistant Instructors.
Training is varied and will develop as each student progresses in Tae Kwon Do
and achieves different belts. Belts are awarded once the student feels ready
and the TAGB consider that the student has reached the required standard.
Students are not pressured to rush through the gradings but are encouraged and
supported to work and develop, as new belts are achieved the training and
syllabus changes ensuring a continual fresh training challenge.
Tae Kwon Do training can incorporate many aspects including;
Kicking practice against Pads
Punching techniques against pads
Patterns (known as Poomse or Kata's in other Martial Arts)
Fitness & warm ups
Stretching
Non contact sparring
Contact sparring (with protective equipment)
Breaking boards (Voluntary)
